Feel Honoured to have attended the historic honour bestowed upon the late Prime Minister of the Zulu Nation, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government, in partnership with the Buthelezi family, will on Wednesday, 27 August 2025 officially launched Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi’s Place of Rest as a Provincial Heritage Site at KwaPhindangene Royal Residence, Mahlabathini, in Ulundi.
The launch, which was presided by the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal Honourable Thamsanqa Ntuli, signals the genesis of a three-year project aimed at preserving Prince Buthelezi’s rich legacy (1928–2023) that extends far beyond cultural, ethnical and political spectrum.Born the son of iNkosi Mathole Buthelezi and Princess Constance Magogo kaDinuzulu, Prince Buthelezi was a direct descendant of the Zulu royal lineage.
Fondly known as Shenge, he carried the responsibilities of leadership with dignity and humility, serving as: Inkosi of the Buthelezi Clan from 1953 until his passing in 2023.
Traditional Prime Minister of the Zulu Nation under three kings – King Cyprian Bhekuzulu, King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu, and King Misuzulu kaZwelithini. Founder and President of the Inkatha Freedom Party (1975–2019), later its President Emeritus. Chief Minister of KwaZulu (1977–1994).

He was a visionary institution-builder, a devout Anglican lay-priest, a husband to Ndlunkulu Irene Audrey Thandekile Mzila, a loving father of eight, and a man who championed education, healthcare, and economic empowerment.
Among his notable contributions are the founding of Mangosuthu University of Technology, Ithala Bank, Prince Mshiyeni Hospital, and the Sithebe Business Development Zone.
The launch of his Place of Rest as a Provincial Heritage Site ensures that future generations will remember Prince Buthelezi not only as a leader, but as a man of extraordinary devotion to his people and his country.
The ceremony will include tributes from government leaders, traditional authorities, the Buthelezi family, and invited dignitaries.
